# Environment Variables

Virtual Contact On-Premises is configured via environment variables defined in the .env file in the installation directory. Key variables include database connection strings, SMTP settings, API keys for third-party services, storage configuration and application secrets.

Never commit the .env file to version control. Store it securely and restrict access to authorised personnel only. A template .env.example file is included in the installation package with all required variables and documentation.
